Anticorrosive protection
Technical details
Producer: Dang d.o.o. (HR)

Dang d.o.o. is active in zinc anodes production for the anticorrosive protection from 1993. These castings are using at the shipbuilding, port installations, underground pipelines and tanks, as well as the raw material for the galvanization. With 12 years of experiences and presence on the market, as well as references in the catode protection of largest tankers produced in Croatia, with constant quality control of Croatian Register of Shipping (CRS is a heritor of ship classification activities at the eastern Adriatic coast. The Austrian Veritas was founded in this area, already in 1858, as the third classification society in the world), guarantee their further successful work. On the export falls 30% off the production. Recently the production spreads on the marine equipment from stainless steel, just as the marine ladders, anchors for vessel from 4 to 15m, railings, platforms etc. Beside all this, Dang d.o.o. is an exclusive representative for Slovenia, Croatia and BIH for inboard engines of Spanish brand Sole S.A. and Motomarine´s (Trieste) marine equipment.
Sacrificial protection is the protection of iron or steel against corrosion by using a more reactive metal. Pieces of zinc or magnesium alloy are attached to pump bodies and pipes. The protected metal becomes the cathode and does not corrode. The anode corrodes, thereby providing the desired sacrificial protection. These items are known as sacrificial anodes and "attract" the corrosion to them rather than the iron/steel. The sacrificial anodes must be replaced periodically as they corrode.
The iron pipe will be connected to a more reactive metal such as magnesium through cooper wires, the magnesium will donate its electrons to the iron preventing it from rusting. Iron which is oxidises will immediately be reduced back to iron.
Zinc was discovered by Andreas Marggraf (Germany) in 1746. The origin of the name comes from the German word zink. It is bluish-silver, ductile metal. Reacts with alkalis and acids. Tarnishes in air. Zinc is found in the minerals zinc blende (sphalerite) (ZnS), calamine, franklinite, smithsonite (ZnCO3), willemite and zincite (ZnO). Used to coat other metal (galvanizing) to protect them from rusting. Although some 90 % of the zinc is used for galvanizing steel. Zinc metal is used in the common dry-cell battery. Also used in alloys such as brass, bronze. Zinc compounds are also used in the manufacture of paints, cosmetics, plastics, electronic devices, and other products.
Cathodic protection is a process in which a structural metal, such as iron, is protected from corrosion by connecting it to a metal that has a more negative reduction half-cell potential, which now corrodes instead of iron. There are two major variations of the cathodic method of corrosion protection. The first is called the impressed current method, and the other is called the sacrificial anode method.
