The innovations of the electronics sector presented at the hanseboot include special lithium-ion batteries for handheld GPS units. This technology comes from mobile telephones. At first sight it may seem insignificant, but it does have great importance for the operating endurance of the units and thus for security of navigation. It permits an operating period of more than ten hours before recharging. Conventional rechargeable batteries lose power after just a few hours on GPS. Single-use batteries last a little longer. Rather than having to take a big pile of expendable batteries along on a cruise, it is now sufficient to take one lithium-ion rechargeable battery and a charging unit, which operates on either 230V shore power, or the 12V onboard network.
