Crash Test Boat

Yachting Monthly's dramatic Crash Test Boat Series, in which a 40ft yacht has been subjected to a series of sailing disasters -- capsize, dismasting, fire and sinking -- ended with a big bang.

The Royal Navy's explosives experts helped the team demonstrate the dangers of a gas explosion by blowing up the yacht off the Isle of Wight. BBC TV's regional news programme 'South Today' and reporter Roger Finn were there to witness the drama and aftermath.

Thearticle and video footage on this final test in the 8-part series will appear in YM's December issue and on the website. The yacht will go on display at London International Boat Show in ExCeL from 6-15 January 2012.

How would you cope with a fire onboard? How much smoke is there? How does a powder extinguisher affect visibility?

What happens when your through hull fittings fail and you start sinking? Whether it's a seacock or a log transducer that fails what can you use to stop the leak?
